Alphonse D'Amato was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised on Long Island. Al D'Amato's political career started with the Nassau County Republican Party, where he was public administrator in 1970 and town supervisor for Hempstead, New York in 1977. Although a rather obscure candidate for Senator, Alphonse D'Amato defeated Senator Jacob Javits in 1980 in the Republican primary. He went on to win the U.S. Senate seat with 45 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Elizabeth Holtzman and Javits, who ran on the Liberal Party ticket. Alphonse D'Amato's constituency knows Senator Al D'Amato by the nickname "Senator Pothole" for his delivery of "constituent services", which supported citizens in individual cases. In addition to his political positioning, Senator Al D'Amato has facilitated massive productivity in the Long Island area of New York. Known for his conservative views, Alphonse D'Amato backs common sense right wing ideals. As a result of his strength of position and consistence, Al D'Amato's popularity has dramatically increased among all voters.
